Math Design




INSTRUCTIONAL GOALS: Students can take this class as an elective math credit or as an art credit and will experience the unique relationship between the two subjects. The class will be completely driven by hands on artistic projects in which students will be actively learning and practicing practical math techniques. The goal of the class is for students to review basic math and geometry skills, but more importantly to think about math in new ways.


At the end of this course, you will

  • understand perimeter, area, volume
  • be able to name and compare shapes
  • be able to model and draft 3D and 2D spaces
  • understand scatter plots, data collections, and conclusions
  • understand less and greater than
  • be able to scale down or up an image
  • understand proportion, perspective, distance
  • know and work with number patterns
  • be able to create fiber art using patterns
  • understand human body and face proportions and ratios
  • know how to create parabolic curves from straight lines
  • be able to read, use, and create bar graphs and pie charts
  • understand how math patterns appear in nature
  • understand fractions, decimals, and percentages
  • know how to sort and categorize
  • be able to graph lines and points
  • understand spatial reasoning
  • be able to measure
  • understand symmetry

General Rules:

  • Students are permitted to miss no more than 15 classes for the semester - all absences beyond this point must be made up before or after school, 5 tardies = 1 absence
  • Students must use art supplies correctly and with respect
  • Respectful and kind behavior and language is expected at all times, students will be asked to the class if this does not happen
  • If students miss days, they must talk with teacher about making up all assignments

Grading Policies:

When students are absent, they are expected to make up all work they missed within 5 class days of their return to school.
