Course / Content Area:  -Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing and speaking. -Demonstrate command of the conventions

of standard English capitalization, punctuation, and spelling when writing. -Apply knowledge of language to understand how language functions in different contexts, to make effective choices for meaning or style, and to comprehend more fully when reading or listening.

 

Description: In this class, students will refine their writing skills through compositions worksheets, games, writing workshops and short readings. There will be a strong emphasis on grammar usage and mechanics. Students will be able to produce clear and coherent writings. They will develop and practice tools to be organized, edit their own work and provide feedback to peers.

 

INSTRUCTIONAL GOALS:

At the end of this course, you will

  • know how to use punctuation correctly
  • understand the importance of high quality writing
  • be able to create dynamic and diverse writing and sentence structures

 

COURSE SCHEDULE

Daily Schedule:

Each day, students will begin the class by being prompted to respond to a quote, or write about a specific topic that I will provide. Students will read, do grammar exercise and write each day. We will also do some vocabulary.

 

Calendar of Topics and Projects

Unit 1: Art Project l - Illustrate a scene in the story; Visually represent a theme or a moment.

Unit 2: Biography of your peer or family member.

Unit 3: Creative short story

Unit 4: Art project ll

 

POLICIES AND PROCEDURES

General Rules:

  • Students are permitted to miss no more than 15 classes for the semester - all absences beyond this point must be made up before or after school, 5 tardies = 1 absence
  • Students must use art supplies correctly and with respect
  • Respectful and kind behavior and language is expected at all times, students will be asked to the class if this does not happen
  • If students miss days, they must talk with teacher about making up all assignments

 

Grading Policies:

When students are absent, they are expected to make up all work they missed within 5 class days of their return to school.
